Salt dough ornaments…

Salt dough

2 cups flour
1 cup regular salt
1 cup water

Mix like you would sugar cookies in the mixer than roll out and cut into cute shapes with cookie cutters. Poke hole with a toothpick if you want to hang as ornament.  Bake at 220 degrees for about two hours.  Paint and glitter as desired.  Enjoy!

Salt dough crafts are one of my favorite crafts to do with my kids.  We do them all year round whenever the kids want something fast to paint but Christmas ornaments are my favorite!  The year we moved to Japan we had to make ALL our Christmas ornaments out of salt dough since I accidently put all our Christmas stuff in storage.  But the tree was still way cute.  I write the kids name and year on the back of the ornament.  We even have one from 1985 when my husband was 6!  They are cheap, cute and fun!

This is what you need.  Flour, salt, mixer and cookie cutters.  I got that giant box of cookie cutters at Walmart years ago and LOVE them.  It was like $10 and we use them for all sorts of stuff.
Preheat your oven to 220 degrees.
Mix up your dough in the mixer.  2 cups flour.  1 cup salt.  1 cup water.  I just dump it all in the mixer with a dough hook and mix for a couple of minutes.  You really can’t mess it up.  It should be the consistency of sugar cookie dough.  Then I flour the counter and throw it down.
Roll out your dough and cut into desired shapes.  Try and get a lot of dough into your cast if you can.  Throw some on the floor so your mother has something to clean later when she’s bored.
Then poke near the top with a toothpick so there is a pretty good sized hole.  I kind of wiggle the toothpick a little because the dough kind of shrinks when it cooks and you don’t want your hole to seal itself up.
Bake for about two hours until the ornaments are all dried out.  Let the ornaments completely cool off.

Paint until they are SUPER cute.

Then glitter.  I have no pictures of the glittering because supervising a two year old glittering is way more important then a photo of it.  I used acrylic paints and then used sparkle mod podge and then glitter.  Because to me the shinier the better.  If I was doing this for a school craft class I would use kid washable paint.
Stick a little ribbon through your hole and you have a super cute ornament!
We even made some fall leaves since the Christmas season isn’t officially here.
Some super colorful gingerbread men.

Some silver and blue bells.

And of course a Christmas tree!

Now go make some cute Christmas ornaments with your kids!  Going to link this up with Just a girls handmade holiday party.

    >Great idea Brook. I haven't made these since Tom and I were newlyweds decorating our first tree. I'll have to try this with the kids. How did you get the glitter to stick?
