I got a lot of questions about how I painted the oak bookcase in the playroom so I thought I’d make a post about it. The other playroom details can be found here.
This is how the bookcase started. I think some of it was oak and some was laminate.
I started out by using deglosser on the whole piece. It is really easy but be sure to wear gloves, eye protection and a mask. Just read the instructions carefully
I used Behr Interior Enamel paint in Satin. The color is Refreshing pool. When painting something that gets a lot of use then use ENAMEL paint instead of normal wall paint. It’s easier to clean up and seems more durable. I applied all the paint with a brush and a mini foam roller.
Ta-da! Love how the bookshelf turned out. I didn’t put anything on it for 2 or 3 weeks so the paint can cure and harden. Even if the paint is dry to the touch it isn’t always cured and can get dents, dings and scratches easier.
I painted this last June and this is a close up of one of the shelves. The bookshelf has held up really well especially considering that I have 4 kids and the bookshelf is in the playroom. I found 3 or 4 little dings in the finish which are probably from a sword swing or flying matchbox cars.
A little side view.
Hope that helps! Now go paint something!

>Oh how wonderful that color is!
I do so love paint.

>Looks fabulous!!! Thanks for posting the products you used. I always see oak/laminate furniture. Now I know how to transform it
>Love it! We recently discovered bonding primer also. We love it! Works fabulously to extend the life of your projects and fill in the wood grains.

Thank you for sharring. This helped me on my way to refinishing a new bookcase.
Thank you so much for sharing your techniques and product list. Your bookcase is lovely. I recently purchased an oak veneer bookcase and I am in the process of refinishing it. I had to use different paints, but I am hoping that proper application and giving it time to cure will give me results similar to yours! I linked to your tutorial on my blog. Thanks again!

Would you use this same process to paint kitchen cabinets that have been stained and have a coat of sealer?
